The Phoenix Festival was commissioned by the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge for A New View Camden.

The City of Camden was awarded the American Cities grant in the amount of $1M. A New View worked to transform illegal dumping sites by converting the spaces into multi-purpose community forums to host art installations and provide a visual narrative to the more than 65,000 people who travel through Camden daily.

Keller Engineers of New Jersey, LLC was retained by Camden Community Partnership as an “in kind provider” and provided consultation to artists and their team of professionals with structural/foundation design, statics, sculpture materials, effect of wind forces, transporting/erection, and constructability recommendations.

The Turntable – Amanda Schachter, SLO Architecture:

Erected at Cooper Poynt Park, Camden.

  • Reviewed the design of the rotating ring, radial column base and overall structure stability.
  • Provided design input for the foundation, floors and walls, static ring, track and dollies, upper steel structure and the interior dome. A site visit was conducted at Temple University where the prototype was constructed.

Bio-Informatic Digester – Vivian Kuan, Terraform One:

Erected at Chestnut and Orchard Streets, Camden

  • Global stability of the digester and mycelium / decomposition clock structure, including consideration of wind loads and ground anchorage.
  • Adequacy of the aluminum grid columns to support the decomposition clock, including a review of conditions at the connections. Adequacy of the aluminum base structure to support the decomposition clock for gravity and wind loads.

Mechan II, The Collector – Tyler Fuqua Creations:

Cramer Hill Neighborhood, North Camden

The heart of the 15-foot-tall robot was designed by a Camden High School student and fabricated by Tyler Fuqua Creations.

  • Design of the support plate, positioning of the sculpture, balance of backpack, and anchorage in a windy environment.
  • Design considerations for wind, uplift, overturning moment, constructability, and overall structural adequacy of the sculpture.
